Sonographer
When you get home tonight at 6:30, having been fighting the system since 7:30 am, not to mention the motorway traffic, try this. Kick the kids off the computer and open up Google Earth. Enter these co-ordinates and zoom to a height of 250m:
39o 04’ 14.93” S, 175o 03’ 19.74” E.
This is where the Diagnostic Imaging Department is located at Fulford Radiology Limited, (a unique 50/50 joint venture between Taranaki Radiologists Limited and the Taranaki District Health Board), adjacent to the part of the Taranaki Base Hospital complex. From the window of our MRI suite (Siemens 1.5T) you can see, over the senior medical car park to the north, the fantastic surf as it breaks along the 6k cycle/walkway that separates the Tasman Sea from the city of New Plymouth, population 63k. To the south, viewed from the multi-slice CT (Toshiba Aquilion) control room, is the fairytale dormant volcano of Mt Taranaki. Perfect if you want to test out your angina threshold by climbing it. Large numbers of people, including um, several, of Fulford’s 53 staff, cycle the 358km around it each January. The rest of the radiology department is under the gray roof to the south-east - that’s where all the usual x-ray stuff is, as well as 4D ultrasound (Philips 22ui), angio and interventional suite (Philips), gamma camera (Siemens), Direct digital OPG (Planmeca) and CR (Konica) gizmos. We have state-of-the-art ultrasound suites with 3D and 4D capabilities.
Go up a bit, 5k will do nicely, and the rest of the city is visible. The numerous parks are wonderfully clear, as are all the diverse amenities New Plymouth provides. If you want a closer look, get out the DVD of “The Last Samurai”, starring Tom Cruise - it was filmed here.
Now back out to an altitude of about 10k for a look at the surrounding country side. Plenty of trees, streams, cows, grass and all that naturey sort of stuff. Not much evidence of the hand of man really. Hunt around and you’ll find our other remote site offices in Stratford, Hawera, Waitara, and elsewhere in the city.
Go a bit higher and see the rest of New Zealand. Not a nuclear power plant in sight. It’s rumored some people actually like living in Auckland or Wellington – well, I suppose if you really have to go there it’s only a few hours drive or a short flight – but with everything that’s on offer in New Plymouth, why would you bother?
Anyway, one of our Sonographers will be going on parental leave, so a brief window of opportunity to join our team exists. If this sounds like your sort of lifestyle, check things out on these websites www.tdhb.org.nz and www.windwand.co.nz or give me a ring on 64 6 753 7857, and ask for Linda (Clinical Imaging Manager).
