.: obstetric ultrasound (late pregnancy) 3rd trimester
Your Lead Maternity Carer (LMC), Obstetrician, Midwife or General Practitioner (GP) has referred you for an ultrasound in the third trimester (28 – 40 weeks) of your pregnancy.
Ultrasound during this stage of your pregnancy can provide important information regarding your baby’s growth and wellbeing, the position of your baby within the uterus and the position of the placenta relative to the cervix (birth canal)
Preparation
There is no preparation necessary for an ultrasound in the 3rd trimester.
Examination Time
Your examination will take at least 30 minutes to perform. During that time measurements of your baby will be made, your baby’s heart rate will be recorded, anatomy of the baby visualised and assessment of the placenta and liquor (fluid around the baby) made.
Your Questions
We understand that you may have many questions about your pregnancy. Please realise that it is not appropriate for our sonographer to answer these questions.
The results of your procedure will be available from your own doctor, referring doctor, midwife or physiotherapist once they have been reported on by our Radiologists (specialist xray doctors). No results will be available at the time of your visit.
Boy or Girl?
On some occasions our sonographer will become aware of a baby’s sex during the course of the ultrasound. In this instance they will only advise you if you have specifically asked to be told. |
