.: pelvic ultrasound

What is a pelvic ultrasound?

This is used to assess the pelvic organs which may include the uterus and ovaries in women, and the prostate gland in men, as well as the kidneys.  A small hand-held transducer which sends out sound waves is used and sends images to a TV screen and pictures are taken of these.  Often an internal ultrasound examination for women is required to view the pelvic organs with greater detail.  If you have any questions or concerns regarding this procedure please contact your referring Doctor.

How long will the examination take?

Your pelvic ultrasound will take approximately 30 minutes.

Preparation

You need a full bladder for this ultrasound.   One and a half hours before appointment empty your bladder.  Drink 1 litre of water within the next ½ hour finishing it one hour before appointment.  It is most important not to go to the toilet again until after the examination.
