What is a Carotid Artery Ultrasound?

A carotid artery ultrasound assesses the structure and function of the carotid arteries in your neck.  A small hand-held transducer which sends out sound waves is moved across your neck after gel has been applied.  Images are formed on a TV screen and pictures are taken of these.

How long will the examination take?

Your carotid artery ultrasound will take about half an hour.

Preparation

No smoking for 4 hours prior to the examination.

In the Department

  • On arrival to Fulford Radiology Services Ltd please check in at the Reception Desk.
  • You will then be taken to the Ultrasound room.
  • Generally examinations run to a tight schedule, so please be on time.  Occasionally, urgent procedures need to be fitted in at short notice and you may be asked to wait.

How will you feel?

The examination should cause you no discomfort although some people feel a little dizzy when they sit or stand up for a few moments at the end of the exam.

How will I get the results of my examination?

The results of your procedure will be available from your own doctor, referring doctor, midwife or physiotherapist once they have been reported on by our Radiologists (specialist xray doctors).  No results will be available at the time of your visit.
