What is a abdomen and renal ultrasound?
This examination is used to assess your abdomen and kidneys. A small hand-held transducer which sends out sound waves is used and sends images to a TV screen and pictures are taken of these. If you have any questions or concerns regarding this procedure contact your referring Doctor.
Examination Time
Your ultrasound examination will take approximately 45 minutes.
Preparation
- Do not eat for 6 hours prior to the examination. Continue to take any medication you may be on.
- You need a full bladder for this ultrasound.
- One and a half hours before appointment empty your bladder then start drinking 1 litre of water.
- You must be finished drinking 1 hour before your appointment time.
- It is most important not to go to the toilet again until after the examination.
- If you have insulin dependent diabetes and are concerned about fasting please notify the Nursing Staff at Fulford Radiology.
In the Department
- On arrival at Fulford Radiology Services Ltd please check in at the Reception Desk.
- You will then be taken to the Ultrasound room.
- Generally examinations run to a tight schedule, so please be on time. Occasionally, urgent procedures need to be fitted in at short notice and you may be asked to wait.
- A chaperone will be present for all internal examinations performed by male sonographers/radiologist
How will I get the results of my examination?
The results of your procedure will be available from your own doctor, referring doctor, midwife or physiotherapist once they have been reported on by our Radiologists (Specialist x-ray doctors). No results will be available at the time of your visit. |
