.: oral contrast

Oral contast can be administered when we do a CT Scan that includes your abdomen and pelvis.

To help see your stomach, small and large intestine, you must drink approximately one litre of the oral contrast that has been given to you. This is usually an orange-flavoured drink containing contrast which helps us to “see” your digestive system on your CT Scan. If you are an Insulin dependant diabetic you may need a different drink so please let us know if this is the case.

We ask you to drink the contrast slowly down to the black line on the bottle. There will be a time period for drinking this which is indicated on the label for you. Usually it is for about an hour prior to your CT, however if you are an In-Patient in a Ward it will usually be for two to three hours or more.

We do not wish you to have a full bladder for your examination, so please go to the toilet at any time before your scan.

For Outpatients, if you have any concerns or questions please come to the Reception counter and the Receptionist will contact a Nurse or Radiographer to discuss these with you. If you are an In-Patient in the Ward please address any queries with your Nurse, who can contact us in CT on Ext. 7492 if needed.
