.: ct colonography
CT Colonography (CTC), sometimes called ‘virtual colonoscopy’, is a new non invasive and easily tolerated technique by which patients receive a special CT scan.
A CT scan is an x-ray test that creates special images of the body. The images from the CT scan are transferred to a computer, which creates a detailed picture of the inside of the colon.
A Radiologist (a doctor who specialises in medical imaging) is then able to evaluate the colon on the computer.
How should I prepare for my CT Colonoscopy examination?
-
Proper preparation of the bowel is essential to ensure a precise and reliable examination. You must, therefore, scrupulously respect the instructions concerning the preparation.
-
We have chosen this preparation because it ensures very good cleansing of the bowel and leaves very little liquid residue, thereby allowing the wall of the bowel to be studied as clearly as possible.
-
In the absence of adequate preparation small fragments of faeces might be mistaken for polyps and lead to an unnecessary colonoscopy.
-
When the preparation is carried out exactly as recommended the bowel is clean and empty, the examination will be of good quality and is well tolerated by almost all patients.
Before arriving at your appointment:
-
Because you will need to wear a hospital gown for your examination, wear clothing that can be changed easily.
-
Metal objects including jewellery and any body piercings may affect the images and should be left at home or removed prior to your examination.
-
Though we do not anticipate any delays in your examination please consider bringing a book, magazine or music player to help you pass the time while you are waiting. We do occasionally have to accommodate emergency cases as they arise.
CT Colonography Preparation Instructions and Checklist - Please read the instructions carefully at least 48 hours before the examination
After Arriving:
-
A radiology nurse or radiographer will collect you from the waiting area, check your details and ask you a few questions regarding your medical history.
-
Before your examination you must inform the radiology nurse or radiographer of any allergies you may have, or if you might be pregnant.
What to expect:
-
CT Colonography is designed to be easily tolerated by patients. The examination can be completed in approximately 20 minutes and most patients report that it causes little or no discomfort.
-
To begin with, you will lie comfortably on the CT scanner table. A very small, flexible tube is inserted into the rectum and some air gently blown into the colon to hold it open. During and after the insertion of the tube, your privacy will be maintained and you will be in control of the amount of air. You may experience a sense of fullness in your abdomen but nearly all patients report that the air insufflation is not painful.
-
It takes approximately 5 minutes to perform the actual CT scan. The first series of pictures will be taken with you lying on your back, followed by another set lying on your stomach. After the pictures are taken, the tube is removed and you will be free to go.
-
Because no sedation is required for the test, you can drive and return to work after the examination is completed.
-
After you leave the Radiologist will interpret the pictures and report the results. The results will be distributed to the Doctor who referred you for the examination.
-
Immediately following your examination, you may resume your regular diet.
